Kayamb Island
Following a trip to the island of Reunion, I brought an instrument called Kayamb. It is a kind of hollow rectangle, formed by pieces of reed held together by the braid of sugar cane and in which we put seeds. It was played by slaves and its sound is reminiscent of the sound of the sea. Whilst listening to this, my Nigerian talking drum, which was given to me by my sister in 1983 and which I know still works, started talking to me. It's taken it all this time for it to learn Glaswegian:@ It said "Play me, ya wee bastard!"
