If you mean the photo with the "red sock" on the neck of the bass, it really is a bass string mute.
Was a homemade model now I have this and serves to silence the strings that are not playing and do not vibrate for sympathy at certain times in addition to giving a tone a little drier without sustain

saw a bass with 8 strings at Music store, each of the 4 strings had an octave string, couldn't try it out and find no info on it...you do?
