July 2017 log

Hey there & thanks for checking out todays engine room news :)

To me (this is the "inventor" writing), wikiloops has always been about sharing tracks which may not sound finished as they are shared - and I imagine most of you reading this will know what I mean:
It is that feeling of "I've done my best recording this template, and now it's up to others to take it somewhere if they like."
It does take some nerve to record just a "naked" one-instrument-track and put it out there, but that's the way most great collaborations start, right?
Someone's got to do it, at the risk of finding out the track doesn't speak to people in the worst case.

It has been quite a while since I got around to recording such template-tracks myself, but I do have a "work in progress" which I would like to share with you today, following the tradition of operating wikiloops as a collaborative effort over the past six years.

As some will have heard about, there is a new wikiloops version in the making, and I am very happy to be able to invite you to have a first look at the "new thing" and to discover some of the added coolness on the beta-site that is available for test use from now on.

If you would like to join the collaboration on getting the new version into its final shape, I'd be very happy about any kind of help, feedback, bug-reports, screenshots, translation offers and (in all honesty) donations, too.

If all goes well, the new version will go "live" on wikiloops.com around the first of august 2017, there are still quite a lot of things to fix & finish (if you hapen to use internet explorer browser, you'll not have much fun on the beta-site as for today), and wikiloops can do with as much testing things on the beta-site as possible.

Have a look & feel free to post feedback here, by Message or in the feedback & suggestions forum.

Thanks for the read & a happy weekend to you!

Pretty cool - I really like the 'same musicians' tab though it's a bit confusing. Does it show the tunes that _all_ the contributors to the current track played or the tunes that _any_ of the contributors played on?

*Edit* - the 'swap out player' is pretty funny - always knew I was replaceable but this really rubs it in! :-)

Other ideas in this area that I find myself missing....

Jukebox with 'shuffle' play rather than ordered by date/ratings. (And ability to choose ALL genres rather than one at a time.)

Find remixes of _my_ tracks (possibly filtered by a particular contributor). E.g. find any tunes of mine that 'X' might have added to. Useful if you've been away a while or are inundated with remixes (I wish!) ;-)

Find tunes that have involve a particular set of players (eg. I'd like to browse for tunes where A and B have already collaborated).

Dick hey :)
re:same musicians tab: it shows exact matches of the currently playing people and falls back to "any track involving someone" if there are no matches

Re:Jukebox - the "oneWorld"-stream is mixed in genres and features a new algo to bring more variety than before, random start still needs to be checked, shuffle is already available on playlists and albums...

re:find_remixes_of_my_tracks : just see what the search engine comes up with if you search for "GrooveEnth OTHERUSER", ordered by date = new contributions involving the two of you,
and lastly:

re:particular set of players
If there are more tracks by that collaboration team, they will show in the alternative tracks tab, or you may search for them the way described above :)

GrooveEnth >>re:find_remixes_of_my_tracks search for "GrooveEnth OTHERUSER"

That's pretty cool to know but not quite what I wanted since it seems to show all tracks that I've been involved in rather than only the tracks that I've been involved in but that somebody has then added to. (Basically I'm looking for a way to catch up after missing a bunch of "a musician has joined your jam" emails :)

Dick i believe you got me wrong there, do not enter the word "OTHERUSER" when searching, but replace it with the second users name you are looking for, like "GrooveEnth Dick" or whatever ;) +0

GrooveEnth Yes - I realised this but it still doesn't seem to work correctly (also tried it with and without quotes). Eg "GrooveEnth Wade" simply shows me a summary page showing 869 tracks! +0

I like it!
Only problem I've encountered is when clicking the thumbs up button I had to click it repeatedly to give standard thumb.
Also the "thank you" does not appear after clicking thumbs up as in old version to acknowledge receipt.

Dick :) thank you, that kind of demonstration says more than a lenghty bug description ;) I'll see what can be done about that one asap. +1

I thought I found a serious bug. However I think it is an issue with Firefox and one of the
many plugins I use within the browser.
WL did not retain the multiple thumbs and I could not reproduce the error after
reloading the browser. Could not produce it with Chrome.
So maybe a moment of humor.

Received notification in newsfeed that "Ghynett left a reply on your comment ".
I did not make a comment and the track is DannyK's add.
Same thing happened a few days ago. Just now remembered it.
It was also from Ghynett.

Dick I believe that one has just been fixed as well, please reload the newsfeed, the errors should be gone now.
Thank you for taking the time to post these videos, that really is very helpfull :) As you can maybe tell, I also fixed the notifications on "comment replys on dicks blog", which used to be broken forever and two days... ;)
