November News
For completion, here's the link to our donations page once more:
https://www.wikiloops.com/donate.php
Well, on the occasion of releasing above video today, I'll dedicate todays blog post to fundraising for wikiloops.
You may have already noticed some of the new features that have been added lately to make sure we can keep paying our server rent,
but let me try to make sure you are up-to-date with things & options:
First, yes, we have kicked off the "let's think of 2018 and try to round up some funds" time of the year a bit early this year,
and help is indeed needed.
I do hope some of the "this is getting way too big to keep around if nobody helps"-feeling expressed in my video message may strike a chord with those who get to see it - and I will try to raise as much awareness and as much support as possible.
If you are willing to help, then I would like to introduce you to two notable things outside of donating yourself which I have been working on lately:
We have a new option to donate to wikiloops and let some (other) member benefit by sponsoring his or her membership.
This is a nice way of giving thanks to some of the incredible wikiloops contributers,
but it also allows your grandma to sponsor your wikiloops membership if she likes to.
You may now create a direct link to the wikiloops support page, which you can then pass on to grandma (or post on facebook) to benefit from any fundraising you do for wikiloops.
To do that, just replace "Baer" by your username in below link:
https://www.wikiloops.com/donate.php?support_for=Baer
and any payments made by your friends and family are turned into membership upgrade credit for you (or whoever else you'd like to rally for).
Another nice-to-know change on the donations page:
We are again able to offer monthly recurring payments (in all countries but germany and china), so if you would like to keep your membership from timing out every X months, you may set up a monthly payment there as well.
Payments via the donations page and via the membership upgrade page will have the same effect on your supporting membership (if you do not dedicate your donation to someone else, of course).
Second, we have been setting up so called "affiliate partnerships" with several online merchants and offerers of musical goods, among them amazon and thomann.de.
The best way to understand how that works is to think of those shops giving back a bit of their revenue to the one who recommended them.
Since we are talking about online shops, using the links offered on wikiloops is enough to identify you as a customer who has been recommended by wikiloops.
The probably most international and best known partner is amazon, and if you visit them via the wikiloops "gateway", they will return a small percentage of your shopping spendings to wikiloops - no matter if you shop music related stuff or christmas presents, you can help us run wikiloops every time you spend money on amazon.
To give these special links a fixed place which you may bookmark if you are planning to use them, I have set up this first draft of the wikiloops affiliate shops page, have a look, and thank you for checking this out, too:
https://www.wikiloops.com/shopping.php
It still is a work in progress, but with your help, it may eventually return something to wikiloops - in the end I am trying to pull all available strings that will not spoil the fun right out. The idea of getting such an affiliate area goes back to Nuno1959s suggestion as far as I remember, and he might have had a good hunch there.
Once I'm at it mentioning some helpers:
I really need to make another mention of our member swordfish from italy, whom I could talk into having a look at the wikiloops translation needs in mid-september, and who (with a little starting-off-help from my end) translated the whole interface to italian within roundabout four weeks.
We've exchanged quite a load of emails in the process and had a really good time doing that.
I do believe in online collaboration - "mille grazie" to swordfish who made it happen for wikiloops italy, and to the unseen others who are still spending their evenings and days off translating to other languages... Let's just imagine for 20 seconds where we would be jamming today if translating wikiloops would not have been a core concept of the project from day one on - if wikiloops would have been launched in german only (which is my native tongue after all), you probably wouldn't be reading this blog today, right?
In the video, I ended up speaking about potentials.
We have so much of that, let's put it to work for wikiloops.
All the best for tonight

Richard I am totally hooked to wikiloops, I have mentioned to you before I help organize the UK record attempt at getting many guitarists together for one day a year, Wikiloops does this every day. A great Web site for all levels and very friendly people who support each other. many many thanks.

Thanks for saying that, Tu - I was a bit unsure wether that would be received in a positive way to be honest.
It may be a common thing to do in fundraising (I have some dark memories of schools doing sponsored "runs", where students aqquired people who would donate X$ for any round run by the student in a sports event), but seeing that the wikiloops audience is *cough* mostly a little bit older than the average high-school student, I was not so sure if the concept would be seen as "fitting".
On the other hand - I have played enough concerts and seen enough venues where it was clear that the venue would let you play and serve you food, but the responsibility of getting a crowd to the event rested with us artists, so maybe the whole idea of "you need to bring your own supporters" is much closer to musicians realities these days than one might like to think...
In the end, I feel I better offer such things, hoping we might be able to extend the circle of supporting individuals a bit beyond the active musicians. Thanks to anyone who dares to help :) +0

You know Wikiloops is so cool and the process involved is really interesting. I think for families and friends to take more notice of how and what we do..is a step forward. I used to busk for a living, I need to 'busk' online now and that way I can support the loops more. I was thinking of making a video that both explains the process and appeals for support at the same time. Not a tutorial, thats bern covered, I mean my own personal experince..I am too unwell these days to play live/busk but wikiloops enables me to still be a performer. Thats why I say its my lifeline.

I will donate/subscribe once I'm more settled. I will be homeless in a months time, with no place to live. Uncertain times ahead for me personally.
Wishing you and the Loopers all the best Dick. Good luck with the fundraising. :) +2

Tough news, Stella. Keeping my fingers crossed for you & hope things will solve themselfs, hang in there...
and thanks for the encouraging words, too.
Please never forget these calls for support are always intended with the subtitle "if you happen to be in a situation that allows you to".
I guess most of us have experienced both sides of that...
Good luck to you, too! +2

oi meu amigo Dick: Eu tenho 63 ano e não tenho emprego.

Dear Francisco,
thank you very much for everything you wrote. I had to use google translate, but I believe I understood.
I will try to write short sentences in reply, hoping they will translate well:
You express a feeling, and I am thankfull for that.
To read your offer of "just tell me to leave if I am causing a financial problem" does make me a little sad.
I have tried to say it before:
All my calls to support wikiloops are meant as "if you can afford". Today I would like to add: "and do not feel bad if you really can not!".
I am aware the situation is different depending on locations.
Even the poorest soul in germany can probably spare five euros for fun each month, but I am quite aware that is not the case for many many people on this planet.
Do not feel bad, it is not your fault - but I still need to ask, right?
You are already supporting wikiloops by telling brazilian musicians about us - thank you for that.
Maybe there is someone within the community who can afford to and would like to sponsor you by clicking here:
https://www.wikiloops.com/donate.php?support_for=francisco+al
and even if that does not happen for some reason:
Be sure that I have never thought of anyone from south america, africa or russia as being an unwanted guest, just because $ and € are hard to get a hold of in these regions.
All the best to you from germany, and please keep enjoying wikiloops

I can not understand why wikiloops has not yet received a massive sponsorship from some giant in the industry. Your idea and the people here are fantastic and there are songs here that are much better than the music industry tries to push down. And the best of all is that it is free for any idea, without prejudice, totally democratic. I wish and believe that someone (industry) or the progressive increase of users give you the necessary support to continue and if you can not give more, know that I and I think that many other users admire you for your idea, perseverance and work. I only have to thank, acknowledge and contribute, I always point out wikiloops to any musician I know and I will continue to do so. Greetings, Dick, and I'm very fond of you, because you deserve it! :)

2 shirts bought + some early Christmas shopping done through the Amazon link, I hope it works. I have instructed Mrs. Gee and daughter to use the link for Amazon too - if I am correct you don't have to be a registered member to go through the link, right?
