wikiloops summertime news 2015

You know what time it is?

Well, it is definetly time for some wikiloops engine room news :)

Above watch is carried by our fellow harp player bleymehl, who has started to build the first iOS-App of wikiloops.com together with a group of his students at the Leipzig University.
We are still in the earlier stage of the development process, and it is way to early to talk about a release date, but thanks to bleymehl we may get there some day.

Another chapter that we've been able to close thanks to endless efforts by bassist nuno1595 is the long-awaited portuguese interface for wikiloops which finally went live on july 15th:

... of course we are interested to close the remaining "grey areas", so if you happen to speak russian, chinese or any other missing dialect and have some time to spare, please do get in touch with me!

Now, as summer moves on we are getting closer and closer to the
2nd wikiloops member meeting in Germany on September 4th-6th 2015 -
the list of confirmed musicians is impressive already, but there are also a few beds left if anyone would still like to join us!

Please check out the details on the wiki meet here.

4th, have a look at what has been sitting right next to my laptop for a few weeks now -

Lots of freshly printed wikiloops stickers! If you'd love to get some, I'll be glad to send them your way, just send me PM with your name & street adress.
They are looking quite neat on any instrument case and are a nice give away to musicians who one would like to point to the 'loops.

What else? I am preparing some minor improvements around the band segment of wikiloops as suggested by some members, and there are some more ideas I'd like to see in the mid term future.
It does look as if wikiloops will be in need of additional server storage sometime in fall, so I will also have to take measures on how to cover that, which may come with unexpected amounts of tech work. Ideally, all of that shouldn't be noticeable from your point of view.

I did receive a very friendly and well meant personal message by one of our newer members concerning the funding situation of wikiloops, which I'd like to answer here publicly before I end for today.
In a nutshell, the message said something along the lines of:
“I am noticing the need for support/donations is regularly addressed and also discussed in the shoutbox, and it comes with a feel of “this place will not be around for long without support”. Don't you think a reasonable monthly fee for all would be a better way to solve this?
People would surely pay that for such a great site!”
To all who feel this way:
Let me assure you, we have not missed that option in our thinking, and I would personally love to get rid of the role of the one who keeps on reminding people support is needed.
Let me try to explain why I feel wikiloops would not be wikiloops if it were a payed-access site:
As a musician and engineer, I am quite aware of the amount of work some of our members put into their recordings, which again are the core of attraction about wikiloops.
To charge money from my fellow recording musicians, so others can enjoy their fantastic tracks seems the wrong way around, doesn't it?
I don't even want to go there thinking about giving credit & free access to these “sharers”, while charging others – one could come up with some very smart and tricky concept, but it would add a strong “marketplace” and competitive aspect to the 'loops, which we have been avoiding for good reason.

A second argument which weighs at least as heavy is:
To turn wikiloops into a payed service website would be the end of the “global jam”.
One needs to be aware that having internet access is not equivalent to having access to online payments. Paypal is not offered or charging enourmous fees in many countries outside Europe and north America, and international bank transaction fees are so ridiculously high that it is basicly impossible to send small amounts of money across the globe.
As I was told, a standard bank transaction from Canada to Germany would have cost a fee of 45 (!) Canadian dollars (that's around 30 €)... even if we decided to ask for a monthly payment of 5 USD, this would turn the “global jam” into a jam of the priviledged.

I do dislike to be the one who has to keep reminding people that funds are needed, and the truth is that less than one percent of all wikiloops users have felt willing & able to make a donation.
There is a small, but growing group of people who have heard the call, and we all owe them some applause for carrying this project. Thank you guys, you know who you are!
I feel wikiloops is worth being out there, and worth being the way it is, thats why I constantly busk for this project.

If our attempts to bring the topic into your eyesight have seemed “pushy” or created the impression that we were about to close wikiloops down, then I'd like to apologize for that, and I do hope the reasons stated above, our mission statement and the annual transparency reports serve as an explanation why we will raise the topic every now and then.

Thanks for the read and happy jamming on wikiloops everyone!

Wikiloops must be free. Everything you said is 100% correct. If I had a million dollars I would give it to you right now. I'm barely getting by, which is why I don't donate very much. I pledge to donate as much as I can afford in the years to come.

If it became a paid site, it would open up a nightmare of customer service issues. People act much different as consumers of a paid service. In fact they are brutal. Wikiloops has to be a "take it or leave it" site with no warranty, and no promises. If people have to pay, they enter this different frame of mind where Dick MUST provide 100 % satisfaction, or they will want their money back, etc etc etc.

There is NO way Wikiloops could EVER survive for even 1 year as a paid service, while maintaining the friendly supportive atmosphere.

Thank you Dick.

After reading your post I enjoy all the new changes to the wikiloops. And it is a growing issue with supporters. Only 1 percent Wow. I do try to support when I can (when money isn't tight) as for the server issue not sure how a server works but if it is a need for a new server could it be possible to set up a new one with the regular supporters and players. Just a thought. If it wasn't for the wikiloops I myself would not have gotten back into playing and furthermore I would not have met a great group of people from all over the world. And I now have the chance to meet Akethesnaker who is in the USA for a visit and will be meeting up with me before he returns to Sweden. So with all of that you can see what wikiloops means to me. A special thanks to bleymehl, and nuno1959 for their input to the wiki. And of course you and your crew who makes this site possible. +4

I feel proud to be part of that 1%. You and your crew do great things here. Great news about all the expansions...ones that have happened and may be happening. Exciting news! Great work on everyones part! So many people I have made a deep connection with through music that I otherwise would never have known. It's an honor to be part of this community! +4

Great site, I thoroughly enjoy playing here. I think paying €4 a month is something EVERYBODY could do, even if you are a student or even unemployed. Just think about how much money you are saving per week by wikilooping and not going down to the pub :P . Anyway, it's good that it is free, and I think it's also ok to remind people once in a while to donate. Kepp up the good work. Peace!! +4

Thank you Dick for everything you're doing, I can't imagine the tremendous effort involved carry forward throughout this project, something so I could never think that it would be a reality, only say yes to something I can help, don't hesitate to count on my cooperation, I think that the Wikiloops spirit is something unique and not is should drop this way of life I think it is the best social network that exists... Thanks to all contributing members that make it possible to give me the hope and the opportunity for playing my guitar +3

I absolutely agree with your thoughts Dick
I've only been here a short time, and I so wished this was in my view 15 years ago or whenever you started this concept. I'm addicted, to the music, the musicians, the people on this site. Wish i could shake the hand of everyone I have had the pleasure of working with. Thanks Dick, for all you do.

I can only say thank you for such a great place for musicians to jam along with what I could call my "music friends". Jammin' is the sauce of music, for sure. And of course wikiloops must be a free site and run with donations. altough I'm a long long time unemployed I always try to make a donation 'cause this site deserves it and 'cause it takes back more than I give in my opinion. So long live wikiloops and all the friends involved in. Cheers!!!! +2

I've made no attempt to disguise my enjoyment of this place. It's fantastic and your decision to keep it free despite the challenges of getting the money to keep it going is admirable and right.

The 'Loops is more than just a music collaboration website to me. It's a social network - a Facebook for musicians, if you will. For those purposes alone, it's a fantastic place worth every penny I can muster but its value to me goes beyond that.

It's also making me a much, much better and more rounded musician. Everyone wants to practice more than they do and they probably, like me, feel they don't do anywhere near enough practice. With the 'Loops, there's new music every day which I can get stuck into whilst also getting the fulfilment of something far more creative and satisfying than just working through some drum patterns on my own. Not only that, I get constructive feedback and, in particular, the utter satisfaction of others finding it good enough to add something to. Finally, I'm playing with other people which, in the case of drums, makes piling through some very repetitive patterns much, much more interesting and rewarding.

And for this, the 'Loops is unique. By its nature it is providing something which cannot be taught: the ability to listen to and work with other musicians. This is a priceless skill every musician learns through trial and error (and being chucked out of bands!).

If I could pay more towards it, I would. Once a new job presents itself I will hugely increase my current payment, such is the value of this place to me. The fact I'm happy to donate on a monthly basis despite having no proper income I hope reinforces just how important this place is to me.

Congratulations Dick and the team of helpers who tirelessly keep this place going. The 'Loops is by far my favourite corner of the internet and long may it live. :)

As you already know I really enjoy the WikiLoops! It's the next thing after playing live with a band! And it's so cool to be able to do this at home! I support the Loops, I also have a Spotify account for 10 bucks a month...but i I am enjoying the Loops much much more... So that 4 euro's a month is very well spent!!!
But when the Loops will become a payment only "service" I agree that it could get some other dimension that's not good for the good feeling thats living here right now!

It's great that there is a group working on an app for the Loops! I was thinking bout that also! I hope it can get some kind of dropbox integration to get track localy in that app,and listen to it without usung any data...i'm on holliday as we speak and it would be great to bemable to donload it once and listen to it without downloading it everytime... The mobile version is,great but doesn't allow a download on an iPhone.....

Looking forward to the meeting in Urft! Gonna bring a Stage piano, portable Hammond and an amp......

Cheerz all and, thanks, again for, making this all happening Dick!

Hey Dick,
As always, a big Thank You for all you and the others do here at the loops!I can say that if not for WikiLoops, I would not be as involved in music as I am now. Having no one local to play with my wikiloops friends are my jam mates and I love it!

As for the pay site idea, I too think that will be more trouble than it is worth. Also, it will take away the feeling of friendship across the world that the site gives to me and I'm sure lots of others.

To all going to the meet up, Have A Great Jam!!! I look forward to seeing video of the session.

Thanks for letting me be part of a great musical concept!
