Halloween news
Hey there, friends of wikiloops, it‘s the developer speaking :)
Yes, some time has passed since my last dev-blog post in the summer, so –for the sake of this being the projects diary- let me sum up some notable things that happened in between before announcing some upcoming good news.
Let me start with reminiscing a little about the wikiloops member meeting 2015 – some of you will have followed up the post-meet forum posts, for those who missed all that:

Yes, we had a fantastic event in Urft with about 30 happy wikiloops members on the site, plus some more tuned in to our premiering video live stream (thanks again to Girard for help from afar!).
There is a quite nice photo gallery here, and also some little video snippets here if you like to have a look.
For all new people who feel like “I didn’t know they do stuff like that on wikiloops!” or others who missed the event this year – let me suggest you come by the wikiloops forum more often, we do such things and announce them here :)
The meeting was covered quite nicely in the local press again, and –even better- attracted a freelance film team aiming to do a TV-documentary on the wikiloops project, who used the meeting to interview the present members and to catch some live jamming action.

Maybe we will get to see some preview material at some point, and we will also be looking for some more members (ideally non-europeans) who would be willing to contribute by appearing in the film in some sort of skype-interview frame – there is no need to hurry with this project (as with some other things mentioned later), but if that sounds interesting to you, feel free to get in touch with me on this!
So much for the “on the ground” action, let’s talk about the online village for a bit: We crossed the 30.000-registerred members mark on October 8th 2015, and with close to 45k uploaded mp3s, we also crossed the 90%-mark of our current server setups capacity.
That does call for action, and so far I’ve been spending quite a lot of time negotiating with several hosting companies.
In the end we are aiming to serve wikiloops from an expandable multiple-server setup – this requires quite a lot of “under the hood” code preparations which are on the way. Ideally you will not even notice any changes besides the site reacting a little quicker than it does on busy saturday nights these days.
Those who have followed my blog a little will expect me to lift off on the “and that is why we ask you to support wikiloops with donations”-topic here. But no, I’ll save that part for later, because there is some more news:
As it has also been announced in my last post here, there has been quite a lot of effort put into developing the first generation of an yet-to-come IOs app for wikiloops by our fellow member Jörg Bleymehl and his students at the Leipzig technical university. We’ll be meeting in Leipzig in a week from now to get together on the projects progress so far.
Let me admit it – I have really taken a lot of time understanding the world of mobile apps, and there is some “historic” thread from 2011 somewhere here in the forum where a user suggested creating an app and me replied: “What exactly would be the benefits of having an app?”.
Well, looking at Jörgs works and realizing how much can be done from a mobile device these days convinced me, and since no one else had started building an android app so far, I decided to sit down in my coding kitchen and open a new chapter by digging into android app programming myself. Now, some weeks later, I have a first version of the app installed on my smartphone, and it is coming along quite nicely, with me getting excited like Baer before uploading a track to wikiloops.
Chances are we’ll be able to start into 2016 with a new toy in the pocket, so, if the due server expansion mentioned above didn’t convince you that sending some support would be the thing to do, maybe the app development news will give you that motivation – we’ll make sure to let our supporters be the first to have a look ;)
Besides all the mentioned tasks, I am continuously looking for sponsors for wikiloops and aiming to replace the random advertisements by recommendable and well regarded sponsors to keep making the wiki ends meet.
As always the due big THANK YOU to all members who did and do support, the project would not be around without you!
So, me is looking ahead to a busy end-of-year-season @ wikiloops headquarters, you guys have a happy Halloween and a lot of fun jamming on wikiloops!
Let me end with the traditional stats record:
Members: 30.772 total, 1.441 active uploaders
Tracks: 44.479
