nobody is going to buy wikiloops.com as long as I dont sell it :)
nope, no way to copyright the idea itself - I wouldnt want to claim I was the first to think of something like that, all I did was create an interface that is easier to use than having a forum with remixes attached to posts.
I can try to get some legal protection by applying for a Trademark or (r) status for the logo and the name, but theese registrations are only applicable for nations, so there would be quite some fees to pay for worldwide coverage (60.000 swiss franks, to be exact) AND having a TM or (r) status does not mean people will not copy name or logo, I only have a better standing when taking things to court. The cost of claiming my rights still would be my problem, at least as long as I havent won a legal row (I'd expect, then the guilty party pays the court cost, but that doesnt have to be that way, depending on where the trial is held).
Truth is, I dont have time or money to run a legal department fpr wikiloops at this stage, so all I have in the game is letting wikiloops become known. As long as I can place wiki in the top ten google results for online jamming / music colaboration/ free backingtracks, I'm in the game. As long as new competitors dont have a larger community than we do, people will decide to go with the more active site. If a huge community site will adapt the idea as an addition to their installed services, times will get ruff. Just imagine you are looking for a video hosting site - what would convince you not to use youtube? Or why dont you use something apart from google as a search engine? because it works just great, and you know theese names by heart. If wikiloops becomes a name in the game, everything will work out without problems, and from some point on, its too late to go into competition if you dont have a huge budget (who would like to try to make a better search engine than google? how would you convince users to try that?).
I didnt start this project to get rich really, seeing how much work it is, it would be a crying shame to see someone else getting fat on my ideas... I believe anyone can understand that thought.
It would take several thousand euros more to get all legal matters secured for the future, with no guarantee wikiloops will ever make some money, and I'm not capable of investing much more than most of my time and the sums noted in the "numbers" thread somewehere in the forum.
Thats basicly why I'm always campaigning for help, the idea I had here is much bigger than what one guy can keep alive on his spending money.
one last thought: I have told you above about the new features I'm working on, and - sad but true - I have placed some more adds on theese new pages. I must say I dont like that at all myself, BUT since the adds on the loopsearch page and the small text adds shown to guests on the jam pages dont even result in half the server cost I have to pay each month, I had to take this action.
So, what I'm trying to say, even if every page had a banner and some more adds on it (then looking like the usual crappy commercial sites), I'd propably not make ends meet that way, or maybe just break even.
To have some funds for legal advice, promotion, coding help, security issues and so on, I'd have to jam this place with adds all the way. People generally overrate the income a webmaster can achive by adds.
So, if you should notice and dislike more adds on wikiloops, please keep in mind that I cannot pay all this for you guys for all time to come.
I am very gratefull to all donors, some people donated sums that can cover wikis costs for a one or two month period, that is absolutely fantastic, thank you so very much!!
Those not donating and bitching about adds... sorry guys, start thinking about what it means to be needing half a gigabyte more fast webspace every week. I am not talking about my work hours people, I am just talking about plain running cost.
I'd love to keep this project non-commercial and add free, what will happen is the attempt to find a way without cutting my own throat.
I will stay honest and transparent on theese matter, promised. I hope that will earn your respect and understanding, even tho it might be we'll see some more adds or commercial offers on here one day.
looking forward to any feedback on this, as always.
