Springtime News 2016
Hello there, friends of wikiloops.com!
Since it was quite prominent during the end-of-the-year season 2015, let me start with a short comment following up the wikiloops support campaign for 2016:
As most of you will have observed, we have not been able to reach our target funding goal by december 31st, so we decided to leave the campaign running a little longer.
593 people did send donations to support wikiloops, totaling in the amazing amount of more than 10.000 US-dollars so far - close to 40% of what we are aiming at.
I feel I can't say "thank you" often enough to express my appreciation of the given support, and no matter how the "40% reached" tastes in your mouth, one must consider this is the very first time we have done this sort of campaign, and the very first time this project does have an advance-budget at all.
If you are interested, you are welcome to take a look at the annual transparency report for 2015 which is available in the forum to get an idea how we are doing in our struggle to keep wikiloops free & independent - it is the best report of five reports issued so far.
Five reports? You read right - we've been doing this for five years, and -no april fools day joke- wikiloops.com celebrated its fifth anniversary on april 1st.

"Far beyond my wildest dreams - and an unbelievable amount of work"
is the shortest conclusion I can come up with after 1830 days of running this platform 24hours a day.
As a birthday gift to wikiloops, a certain Mr. Ivan and me spent quite a lot of hours tackling the next step in letting people from all around the globe jam together on wikiloops, translating the
first russian interface version which went live just in time on
http://www.ru.wikiloops.com

As you may imagine, doing this translation which is the first one to feature non-english lettering came with quite a lot of extra obstacles,
and Ivan really does deserve a huge pat on the back for finding solutions and giving advice how to deal with certain quite special aspects of russian grammar.
Have a look sometime, wikiloops in kyrillic looks quite funky :)
Now, let me use this as a rather weird way to switch to the next topic - as we do our best to let folks from many countries collaborate on wikiloops,
we all know there is a lot of conflict going on on the planet lately.
I do not offer political comments on wikiloops as a rule, but in this very case it does make sense - here's why:
Crazy as it may sound, the Syria conflict is to blame for the wikiloops member meeting 2016 being at risk, and it even seemed rather likely to get cancelled in the past weeks.
Our beloved venue in Urft is booked out to the roof, simply because all the youth hostels and other accomodations are being used to host refugees from Syria this year.
The very good and quite fresh news is - we will make it happen never the less,
on the first weekend of September 2016, again close to wikiloops headquarters west of Cologne, Germany.
Detailed info and registration procedure for this year will be issued shortly, stay tuned!
Right now, I'm about to head out to Frankfurt international music fair to find out if there may be some friendly instrument or gear supplier interested to appear as a sponsor on the 'loops - will let you know how that went, too.
Ending -as always- with the stats of today:
36.556 members registered,
56.112 tracks online
& thanks for the read :)
