Wow what a great story and a cool memory, good for you!! I have been listening to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush all yesterday and I will continue today - I just can't believe I have never heard of him. Must be one of the most underrated guitarist ever. It reminds me of the feeling I had when I discovered Robin Trower, another Hendrix disciple who is underrated. Absolute joy.
It is early days as I haven't had time to really get into it, but it seems to me that on a technical ability, what he did in the 70ies was up there with the best! Blues, jazz, rock, he can do it all! On one track he does some crazy tapping... :J

Anyway, here is one band that caught my attention, one of those late 60ies early 70ies rock bands.
"...In the mighty, marble-adorned and blood-stained halls of heavy metal, countless bands take their rightful places on podiums, pillars and plinths. However, not all of them make it that far. Some, like Wicked Lady, lurk dormant and unwavering in the shadows, beckoning cult-like tendencies.
The Axeman Cometh, which is ultimately a selection of material recorded between the electrifying years of 1969 and 1972, is truly no-nonsense heavy metal thunder. In the same vein as the Canadian/Americans who coined the phrase, Wicked Lady are mysterious, far out and hellbent on hell-raising riffs. The opener, ‘Run The Night’? It’s an immediate classic. It’s fuelled by ungodly things and the occult. It’s rock ‘n’ roll, baby..."

Whilst on my enforced hiatus in the UK, I got asked to dep a couple of gigs for a show band performing USA Southern Rock - you know, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc... Among the 24 songs I had to learn was one I had never heard before from a band I'd never heard of but it quickly became one of my favourite songs to play.
It's 'Can't You See' by The Marshall Tucker Band. What a cracking piece of early '70s cool rock. Loved it.
