Buddy was a refuge
From the trailer park
Midnight when he hit the road
With his daddy's marks

Buddy never had no friends
Cept a mutt named Chum
They wandered cross the countryside
Riding on his thumb

The kindness of strangers
Fell in short supply
Sickness swept the land
Like a wicked wildfire

Buddy quickly learned
Which way the wind was blowin'
They never stayed too long
Best to keep on rollin

Well a boy tossed upon the road
Soon becomes a man
Found himself in a town
Forced to make a stand

Chum was fierce and loyal
As any dog had been
Buddy walked away
While the Sheriff met his end

Buddy buried Chum
Down by the river side
Marked it with a cross
Where his only friend had died

He was a wanted man
Hunted far and wide
But he'd spent his life
Learning how to hide

His Daddy was surprised
By the knock upon the door
He never knew what hit him
As he was slammed to the floor

Neither one was much for words
And what was there to say
Buddy could have killed his Daddy
Instead he walked away

There's no moral to the story
No lesson to be drawn
You're hurled into the world
Soon to be gone

Buddy's luck run out
On the edge of dark
And when the stripped him of his shirt
They found his Daddy's marks
