Gleichnis

Es ist ein Brunnen, der heißt Leid;
draus fließt die lautre Seligkeit.
Doch wer nur in den Brunnen schaut,
den graut.

Er sieht im tiefen Wasserschacht
sein lichtes Bild umrahmt von Nacht.
O trinke! da zerrinnt dein Bild:
Licht quillt.

Parable

It is a well that is called sorrow;
out of it flows pure bliss.
But if you only look into the well,
you dread.

In the deep water shaft he sees
his light picture framed by night.
O drink! your picture melts away:
light swells.
