The Absence of My Mother (2)

There is a loud quiet this morning,
And I wish I could hear my mother,
But I am my own parent now,
Stabbing at situations
And hoping I make the right decisions.

I look up at the charcoal sky,
Wondering if she is there,
But there is no guidance from the clouds.

As they move in an undecided fashion,
The rain pools in their thick fists,
Graying at the edges
Before their tears fall to the ground,

Joining mine.

The Many Moods of Summer

Clear clouds,
simply white and fluffy,

Nimbus has passed,
no longer scraping
its wet nails
onto the soil below.

Now cotton candy
cumulus remains,
every day the same
happy boring sunshine.

Its sweet sunny face
a facade,
whitewashing the days ahead,
acting like nothing has ever happened.

But I remember
these past several months
when it woke up angry,
shouting for no apparent reason.

I will revel in these happy times,
knowing it’s just a matter of months
until summer swells like before,

And the black fists clench,
ready to rip the terrain
once again.

Hard Surface

I have wasted my time
Trying to get you
To see me differently.

It’s like trying to
Bend a cloud,
Or pull a piece of water
From a pond.

You are a steel rod
Incapable of bending,
A hard surface
That reflects no light,

A heavy magnet,
Pulling in weaker metals 
That cannot get away.

The Orchestra

I hear a crackle
On the edge of the horizon,
As the electric vein
Shimmers in the moonlight,
Pointing it skinny finger down at us.

We are pawns in nature’s play
As we sit
Waiting for the storm to build,
It’s bellowing symphony of sounds,
A full concert,

All instruments alive,
Clammoring for attention,

Natures orchestra
Swelling swelling
And finally dying down
