A New Beginning

The door was broken, but suddenly a window became visible. I never noticed the dingy pane before. The glass was cloudy like a foggy day. I couldn’t see through it. I yanked at it, but it was sealed shut.

I walked over to it and squinted. What was out there? I began rubbing on the aging glass, trying to break through the din.

It started as a small circle and then got larger as I continued polishing. Soon there was a new view, one I hadn’t noticed before, a different perspective. I struggled to open the jammed pane, as its squeaky voice laughed at my futile efforts.

How long had this window been neglected? Why hadn’t I seen it before?

I took my sleeve and continued rubbing over the face of the glass. It started smiling at me as the sun began to reach its warm arms into the room. The shadows danced, and played tricks on my tired eyes, as I continued rubbing, forever tugging on the jammed window pane.

Suddenly there was a creak in the window, as it yawned and gradually lifted. Fresh air rushed into the room, bouncing on the corners, and bringing the dust motes to life. The house was breathing again, slowly at first, but as the wind circulated, gathering momentum, the room was suddenly alive.

I looked around as the breeze, shadows, and sun danced together. It was a new day. A new view. And although the door I normally used was shut, an open window now made everything possible.
