I have really fallen in love with the English horn as a blend in instrument. I discovered it beautifully demonstrated on a CD by Itamar Eraz “desert song’ album—worth a listen if you can find it streaming. It is on Tidal. I wish I could play like any in that group.

I used to play English horn and oboe (in school orchestras). Very satisfying sound and feel to it. With the EWI sound it works best in the lower notes and starts to sound off the higher you go. That's also true with some of the lower sounding real instruments (baritone sax, tuba, double bass, etc,)

Thanks Wade, that's good information. My wife doesn't like the high notes and maybe that's the reason. I really notice it with the EWI French horn-- it looses its sweet bell tones in higher ranges. Hmmm, what to substitute? Maybe find better synths / filters....

Oddly the same is also true for very high pitch instruments. The piccolo and my favorite, the sopranino sax. It's best not to play the top of the instrument as it sounds shrill. There are two and a half octaves available, I only use the lower two and won't even consider altissimo. Context is (for me) far more important than range. Probably 90% of the things I play uses 1 1/2 octaves max. One of the exercises that I used to do (partly it stuck?) was to limit all my playing to one octave. Later I extended this, but only used higher notes for "climaxes", but still not very high. These were exercises for tone control as well as composition. Tone control is kind of irrelevant playing an EWI, except in knowing where those limits are for having a realistic/acceptable sound.

Fascinating. I thought real instruments meant being able to play the entire range without limitations. I was really tempted to find an English horn until I saw the ~$13,000 price and knowing I would never be a professional, which put me on to the EWI. I am very happy with it and it leverages my meager ability with assistance from the DAW. Now I have new parameters to consider--Thanks! B)

A pleasure! There are student English horns that aren't wood, but sound the same. New from China between 2K and 3.5K. Also used ones. I'd recommend lessons for sure as it's a difficult beastie and you need to know how to work the reeds. Ready made reeds are expensive and not always good. Embouchure (double reed both lips tucked under) takes some getting used to as well as the "back pressure".

Right, I didn’t even think about the reed problem. Thanks for your insight, EWI is just too convenient by comparison. I was miffed that I couldn’t get a solid note to play for a week of trying with my student flute—how hard could blowing into a hole be—even Coke bottles worked easier.

It's one of those things where there are many factors, e.g. angle of the flute, angle of your air stream, narrowness of the air stream, etc. Even more difficult are the end blown jobs like a shakuhachi. I played regular side blown flutes for years... silver and bamboo, but the shakuhachi took a very long time to get right with its completely different angles and embouchure.

It sounds like you have had a lot of fun exploring the wind instruments. I was tempted by this site’s offerings: https://www.shakuhachi.com/Q-Models-Headjoint.html. Then again, DAWs are offering more sounds with filters/synths. My wife is a watercolorist and we laugh about how I could also be one digitally by just using the Watercolor filter in Photoshop. Indeed the embouchure is a somewhat mysterious thing as sometimes I can’t get the flute to sound right, other times easy. Yes, so many factors, wet lips, mood-etc.
