I couldn't begin to tell you what notes are what or what chords I play. I learned the long way which was to start off young and listen to a lot of my dads vinyls and DVDs. I just watched guitarists hands and tried to mimic what I saw. +0

Also I don't mean that to sound like that's any better than taking proper lessons. I think being able to read music has more of an advantage and helps you advance further and much faster. +0
