Must've been some time back in the 'teens,
Down by the Needle in a pair of ripped jeans,
She was sittin' on a stone wall,
Choppin' out 'Melon on a battered old Stagg,
Long hair tucked in a beanie hat,
Top E sounding a hair too flat,
Beanie Girl got all the chords though,
Keeps them in a lightning bag.

Start at E Major motor to D,
Drive it though A for a moment of G,
Then it comes back home,
With a 7th on the back just to make it sound cool.

Rain City heatwave coming alive,
I ain't seen a drop since the day I arrived,
It's been buildin' for a week now,
Ninety in the shade here for seven days straight,
Each day everyone walkin' round pissed,
Rain City aircon doesn't exist,
Beanie Girl brew us a storm up,
Bring it home to Washington State.

Rain City heatwave breaking at last,
Started with a drop now it's coming down fast,
People running over wet grass,
Lookin' for a sanctuary in any dry place,
Just one left now out in the park,
Still fired up as the day grows dark,
Beanie Girl lookin' up skyward,
Laughing at the rain in her face.

Start at E Major motor to D,
Drive it though A for a moment of G,
Then it comes back home,
With a 7th on the back just to make it sound cool.

[Notes]
So it's a Seattle song (obviously) and of course it generally rains
a lot there so some people do call it "Rain City". I was there on
business in (I think) 2014 when there was indeed an unusually hot,
dry spell that broke a few records at the time. And I can tell you
that my experience was that even when Air Conditioning WAS available
it was generally either broken or smelled of mould. I guess they don't
feel they need it there so much.

And there was a Beanie Girl - pretty much as described. I took a break
from a stuffy conference and went over to the Space Needle which I had
neither the time nor the inclination to go up but sat in the green spaces
nearby with a cold drink and there she was on the wall, on her own
playing guitar for no-one in particular. Might not have been a Stagg and
TBH it could easily have been the B that was slightly off.

I was just thinking about how I'd rather sit in the sun listening to her
all day and not go back to work when the long awaited rain came. I doubt she
actually caused it but it's fun to think she might have.

And the song she was playing at the time? Yes, of course it was Blind Melon's
classic "No Rain". The Chord progession called out in the lyrics is (as sharp-eyed
players will have already spotted) the verse part of that.

It's a nice set of simple open chords that are pretty easy to learn and always sound
good (IMHO). That's why you find them around a lot - Start with E minor
and go EGDA and its "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and of course do the same
with the A modified to A7sus4 and you have "Wonderwall"... I could go on.

My guitar sat in a corner. Then I discovered wikiloops and now, not one day has gone by that I haven't played it.
