We live in a world where the evening news delivers horrific accounts of toddlers beaten
to death by their "parents" and people displaced, maimed and killed in futile wars.
Within all this mayhem, I find that the recent spate of "Romance Fraud" cases strike me
as particularly cruel and heartless.

If you are not up to speed with this, it's the work of very skilled criminals who use fake
online profiles to contact people via various e-means to convince them that they have found
their perfect partner. They then stay continuously in touch until the trust and infatuation
rises to a level suited to extracting large sums of money before disappering into the ether.

I recently read that an estimated £16 Million was stolen from people in the UK in the last
year alone with many people being conned out of their life savings. These days, the primary
targets are women on their own - it opened my eyes as I had sort of assumed that this type
of con was aimed at men based on the number of mails I used to get from the "Natashas and
Irinas" of this world promising to make "good bouncy bouncy" with me if I could just send them
the air fare from whichever former Soviet block state the resided in - oh, and a couple of
thousand to buy medicine for their sick mother.

I suppose some people fell for that kind of thing (else why bother sending them?) and you
do sort of think "more fool you"... But this new spate is a much longer game and its much
more insidious and nasty.

There was a TV article this week featuring a woman who had been cleaned out and bravely agreed
to be interviewed to warn others. She said that she obviously regretted losing the money but
the thing she really missed was how great she felt when her "Gordon" was in touch with her.

Breaks your heart doesn't it?
