Hi Loopers,

just yesterday I read that my friend and Herring King Band mate Dave A.K.A. TEE-KWA has had a heart attack and is undergoing a series of operations to fix it. As it stands, he will live to sing another song, get well soon Dave.

I am 58 years old, and I guess many Loopers here are around 50+ years old, so we are entering the time of our life where this thing is going to happen more.

I don't know how much exercise Dave was doing, and what the cause of his episode was, but I for one sat for many years on my butt on the red sofa, not doing too much sport and slowly growing a typical middle age gut and losing muscle mass and strength. I always knew in these "lazy years" that I need to do something, but... the red sofa was calling and the pull of the soft leather was too strong...too strong...

However, once I reached around 51 or so a colleague of mine gave me a pat on the shoulder, and all I could feel was wobbling fat instead of muscle. That felt weird. I then somewhat surprisingly decided it's time to grow up, went to the doctor and got myself checked up, and in addition of some doctory things started to do some sports. At the beginning once a week, but over time it grew and now I am tearing it up 3 times a week for about 1.5 - 2 hours. I feel great, the gut is almost gone and I can climb up a few stairs without needing an oxygen tent afterwards. As a matter of fact, I run 5 km at a good pace once a week without problems now, and lift weights probably heavier than many much younger chaps can.

Funny thing is, I hate running, it does my head in, it's soooooooo boooooooring...... and the sofa is still there taunting me...but...but... got to keep at it.

So, all that exercise does not mean I won't get problems or diseases soon, but I guess it improves the odds. All I can say to my fellow Loopers here, in case you are like me who does not really fancy the exercising: I feel you, I know exactly how it is but please, do it anyway. You will feel better, and we will enjoy your music hat much longer. Don't wait until you are 52 like I did, start earlier, it will be easier.

Peace brothers and sisters, stay healthy.
