As much as this is about anything, it's kind of about "Cactus Plugging". Which, if you are unfamiliar, is the practice (esp. in Arizona) of driving (well armed) out into the desert and shooting the hell out of Cactus Plants.
The Saguaro's in particular are protected in AZ and randomly discharging firearms also frowned upon - but miles from anywhere and anyone... It's not without risks though (Google "David Grundman" who basically got killed doing it -it's worth it).
Anyway, I did once see two older fellows in a bar - One with a white beard and one looking like he was barely living. After a quite a few drinks they were joined by a younger bearded guy with long hair and then off they went clearly excited about an upcoming trip.
They may just have been going fishing but I had my doubts and I did think "there goes the father the son and the holy ghost".
