Jeremy came from outer space,
But he worked at the local mall,
He had a hat and a smiley face,
Which was how he could fool us all.
Jeremy watched as people shopped,
And recorded the words they said,
He picked up anything that they dropped,
And he stored it under his bed.
Every night when the lights dimmed low,
He'd whisper to all of his things,
They'd hum and flicker and sometimes glow,
As he searched for abandoned dreams.
Jeremy, Jeremy, man of mystery,
Visitor from the skies,
Plotting a pathway through our misery,
Seeing through our disguise.
And the objects twinkle,
As the artifacts shine.
In the sanctuary of his room,
He made patterns from what he’d found,
Mapping the contours of human gloom,
Into models of light and sound.
Jeremy disappeared one day,
His room had been cleaned and swept,
The words and things had been cleared away,
Though the memories he had kept.
He had to let his subjects grow,
Though he knew he'd be back again,
He was here two thousand years ago,
But he wasn't called Jeremy then.
Jeremy, Jeremy, timeless mystery,
Guardian of the stars,
Master of human ethnohistory,
Studying all that's ours.
And the objects twinkle,
As the artifacts shine.
But he worked at the local mall,
He had a hat and a smiley face,
Which was how he could fool us all.
