Wade It was only a problem because they were taking tourists out there. It's a tiny island and (by our standards) a little burp of a volcano. If nobody was out there it would have been 100% ignored. Not good for those poor people who would have thought if they are giving tours it must be safe. Not safe hanging around a live erupting volcano, especially when it's a tiny island and you've got nowhere to go. Very sad and very avoidable. We have major eruptions here of our BIG volcanoes. If nobody gets killed it's not news. Last time Mt Rupehu went off it would have been thousands of times the size of the White Island eruption (and not that long ago). We also have Lake Taupo which is a "Super Volcano" that has blown numerous times, but not since human habitation. Last eruption was heard and reported in China. It's had the largest volcanic eruption of the last 10,000 years of earth history. This is a very active area, but White Island is (in terms of volcanoes) a little fart. +1
