Senseless (introduction)

Some questions have no answers we can grasp
Until the next dimension bids us through
Five senses we are given, at the most
Imagine without any! What to do?
There’s sight and hearing, touch and taste and smell
The loss of all, a vegetative state
But who can ever contemplate the truth
Behind a mind ‘locked-in’ with unknown fate

Does colour have a feel when sight is lost?
What shade of green the taste of Nature’s breath?
Will touching white throw light upon dull minds?
Can black through dormant nostrils hasten death?
Will music have a meaning for the deaf?
What melody will silent tongues retain?
Who holds a rhythm, sees a harmony?
Can we inhale a song from heart to brain?
What point to beauty lost in sightless space?

Beholding nought but memory inclined
To fade and drift as aimless passing shapes
No symmetry, no form, emotion’s blind
Do thoughts exist if never put to words?
Is ‘soul’ a cliché for the unexplained?
Can ideas grow, tight cloistered in dark caves?
Does sanity define the empty brained?
So long as air inflates a waiting lung
And blood and bile are left to freely flow
Despite a lack of consciousness, it seems
A human life exists to thrive and grow
