Wade Diligent practice makes those difficulties become easier. The mistake many make is to try too hard and make everything sound difficult. The pros make everything sound easy.

Practice hard, and play/record within your comfort zone. +1

Wade A great trick that I hear some of my favorite players use is to sing what they are playing while they are playing. This has multiple benefits. It slows you down to a realistic pace, it ensure that you're playing what you hear and not a bunch of useless riffs and arpeggios, and (depending on the player) makes for a more melodic line.

Thinking beyond your playing ability OR playing beyond your thinking ability are both potential train wrecks. The vocalization trick is an attempt to sync these two. Once you bring these two aspects together it all starts to happen musically. What you want is a flow of musical consciousness... to be "in the zone".

Unfortunately sax and other wind players can only think singing and not actually do this while playing. String and keyboard players have this trick always available to them... and you don't need to have a good voice as it's the mental process that's important. +0
