This wonderful template from Filo deserves many more adds. I've conjured up a vision (my own... not Filo's) of a Alpaca (Vicuña). Very cute, yet not what they seem. Feisty, irritable, and like the camel it really is. I hope you enjoy it.

Wade Thanks Teg. I do several things in editing in order to match the template/backing. That varies with each recording.

Giving a slight stereo effect and panning are primary. Reverb and delay are used to match the other instrument's ambiance. If there is a problem with the balance of tone then I'll use EQ (infrequently). I almost never use compression since dynamics is something that should (IMHO) be embraced as a primary tool. If a specific section of playing is too loud or too soft I'll increase or reduce accordingly. I never use chorus as it's mainly a cover for bad tuning/intonation by adding other frequencies that are off tuning (like having more players in an ensemble it's a mix of tunings). It works well for guitars, but does nothing for our single note at a time playing. Developing good tone and playing with good intonation eliminates the need for FX that cover inadequacies.

Well, those are my prejudices which dictate how I play and edit. They are not absolutes. Having an idea of how you wish to sound (a goal) can give you your own editing priorities. When I record in an engineer's studio (infrequently), then it becomes his set of priorities for my tone and levels in his mix. +2

Teg My experiences are quite different than yours, I played in a rock and blues band and in a few rock tunes I would use effects like chorus and phase shifters to accommodate certain styles. When playing in a variety band performing for weddings or public functions I always played clean. And of course playing in a community band or a jazz ensemble is different especially when playing pieces that range from jazz to classical to marches. I just really enjoy playing most genres. +2

Wade The comments I made were specifically about recording (which you asked about). Playing live is a matter of fitting with the genre (as you said) but also filling the room with sound which might be with or without a PA system.

This is an excellent place to take part in all genres, which I haven't done live. I've even done the extremes here of country, metal, classical, and experimental. Rock, pop, jazz and ambient are the normal.

Recording generally requires a cleaner sound than live, especially if you're the melodic lead. Most live stuff I've played is relatively loud where emphasizing the rhythm for dancing and getting it all into a groove is paramount. Clean matters less. +1
