Sometimes I think of lyrics for a song but maybe Id like to hear another vocalist sing it. I thought ...how about I just upload the template unchanged so I can add lyrics? Sounds simple...what ya all think?

Ok say I find a great jam...and I write lyrics for it but instead of me singing them...the words are ready for anyone else to try. Sometimes for a vocalist its fun just to sing without the labour of writing lyrics. So how to make it possible? I would upload a remix of the jam, without changing it just to be able to choose an option to add lyrics....it is a simple way to do it using existing Wikiloops structure.

Sounds like a great idea to me. My daughter has a stunning voice, but as yet has shown mo talent for writing. So this would be a perfect way for her to get started.

How about doing like this ?

You could point to the track you wrote the lyrics for but others might like to use them for any other jam ?

I kind of remember Dick was thinking on something in the Forum for the lyrics ...

Good idea but personally I like to custom lyrics for a song and yes Dick has mentioned a lyric library..this is a separate idea where anyone could use lyrics they like for whatever. Im thinking it would be cool to give a particular song its words..for instance sometimes I think a song would better suit a male voice but I still would enjoy writing the lyrics.

my experience tells me that a song will be different from one singer to the next ... what you might find appropriate for a track in terms of lyric might be different for another one ;) ... i like the idea that music on one side, lyrics on another side could be just material for singer's creativity !
and that doesnt mean no tweak or custom lyrics ;)

You could write a comment:"I have written lyrics for this template. Give me a PM and I will send them to you if you are a singer who want to bring them both together".
This has some legal advantages for you, Tu, too.

I think when you write lyrics for something, you might also hear someone in mind who you think could sing what you are hearing in your writing, you could PM them and point them to the song. I'd have at least 4 folks in mind and ask that many singers, as it it hard to get an add, and it should be something that you know they've done or could do(but haven't yet). But sometimes we hear something and the enthusiasm isn't shared by the ask-ees, If you take this approach just be prepared to have thick skin. Life would be smoother with thick skin!

Another approach is you sing it and mention in your description that you are only giving an example of what you are hearing and Make the request that other singers give it a shot.

With a little help from a friend.
What makes a cover better than the original version?

There is no bigger pleasure for a songwriter than people singing your lyrics and melody ("Blowing in the Wind"). I really share the idea of team-work in music! ("Travelling Willburys"). But I don't guess that the complete lyrics collection of Leonard Cohen are helpful for working on Dylan's songs.

Tu, if you write lyrics for a song of me, I will sing it for you - even if other lyrics might exist.

Many songs have a "standard"-structure and I really wonder why so few singers dare to lay down some emotions and words. I would call a singer someone who sings daily 15 minutes or more. Daily :)
I know that writers write daily, too.

Sometimes you have an idea how the lyrics should look, but you do not have the voice to sing it. These are my 2 cents. :W

Hey folks,
a little late once more, but let me try to add my 2cents to this thread.

As it has been mentioned, we've had a similar discussion some time ago, leading to what we ended up calling the "lyric library"-idea, which I admittedly didn't follow up too much, seeing that I have ... yeah, you now.
hat I did do is pass on the idea of the "lyric library" to our friends at Leipzig media university, and there was a student who wrote a master-project-paper on the topic of integrating such a feature on wikiloops. I actualy visited Leipzig a few weeks ago to attend the final presentation of that student, which was quite a nice experience.
Now, that has not really brought us anywhere nearer to having the ideal solution at hand so far, but when discussing the idea,
the one aspect that seemed most problematic (and which we hadn't thought of in our initial discussion here) is the following one:
The idea to host some kind of lyric library where people can share written lyrics and hope that someone will use them in a wikiloops collaboration is nice and well,
but to find a track which will match the verse / chorus structure of the written lyrics will be very difficult. Singers might end up realizing the track was missing the repetition needed for the final verse, or the chorus being just four bars longer than needed, to find the ideal match would be a very lucky moment. The only way to increase the chance of getting to actually sing some of those lyrics would be to take the creative freedom to change the offered lyrics in some way to let them match a song, but then the lyrics in their original form might be turned into something which the original author would not confirm of.
Just think you had written a song that praises the government for three verses, which turns out to be totally ironic in verse four... now comes singer X and uses only the first three verses... ouch!

What has been considered by some of you is a little different from the idea of a "stand-alone" lyrics collection - if you are thinking to provide "unsung" lyrics along with a track (which definetly has a matching structure, then), the major fault of the lyrics library idea would not apply, while the use of those lyrics would be less "free", but rather attached to using them on the track the lyric author chose.
To me, that would be less of a "library", but might be better named as "un-sung songs section", hope you understand the distinction I am trying to make here :)
Similar to what I said last time, I'd like to encourage you to experiment with the idea before I rush to developing.
As things are right now, you have some options how to go about:
If you are the author of the track to use for your lyrics, you might as well add them to the description field for now.
To add them in the "official" lyrics field, you would have to:
1st change your upload to "vocals"->save
2nd re visit the edit page, enter the lyrics into the now showing lyrics field, save
3rd re visit the edit page, change instrument back from vocals to what you really played, save.

If you are not the author of the music but have written a lyric for a particular song, I'd suggest you post these to the forum, ideally with some common "tag" to spot such threads, p.e. "unsung song: Benny the Beaver". Then, write a comment below the track you chose with a link to that forum thread and see what happens.

Sorry for the extensive morning read, hope that's putting things in perspective a bit ;)

how hard is it to add another instrument dick? i.e. an "unsung lyric" instrument. then all you would do as tu says is to download the track you've written the lyric for and then edit (on upload of same track) the lyric sheet this new instrument could then be searched as "tracks with unsung lyrics"..... just a thought.

What I have done before is had some lyrics and sent them to someone I thought could sing them as I heard them in my head - I try not sing, but sometimes have some lyrics I think are worthy of having someone who is a singer sing. I've sang / spoken them over the track and emailed the track to the person so they could get a feel for where I was thinking the placement should be, and so on. An example of this is track# 57703 where Kellsbells sang some lyrics of mine.....and she was forced to listen to my lousy singing on a reference track! I don't know if this helps or prompts any ideas from others.....or, perhaps a non-singer can designate a track as a "reference" track with vocals for the good singers to latch on to and do their magic....

My experience agrees with an earlier observation - the lyrics I write are integrated with the song's mood, melody and chord/riff structure. It would need work and changes to make them fit a different song but then they wouldn't be the same lyrics anymore. It's possible a 'lyrics library' would evolve to be a 'prose library' for finding interesting phrases, from different sources, that could be combined together.

Would be better as a "suggested lyrics" option in it's own clickbox field. Also, many lyrics can be used in many different songs- Perhaps a "Lyrics Pool" would be a good place to keep your credit and contribute in ways which may not be obvious, but totally valuable to a singer with writer's block - or something... Just check a box as to your permissions or limitations of use.

It seems to work well to simply post the lyrics as a "Compliment" under the track, with your permissions included, (i.e. "Use as you wish")

The Forum Post is were I found all the lyrics I have used. Posting lyrics in the comment section for a intended song is a good idea but finding it is the issue unless you post a link to it on the form post.(note) You can hear the lyrics I used in my “ Profile Showcase”
