These are from the user manual for Source Audio EQ2 but should work on any EQ

0-200 hz is lows.
200-700 is low mids
700-3000 hz is mid range
3000-7000 hz is upper mid range
7000-21000hz is highs.

The highest range a guitar goes is about 8000hz and anything over that is "headroom, overtones and harmonics"
Use a high pass filter on the EQ to cut all frequencies below 80-150 hz to get rid of low end "boom". Start at 80 and increase until low E is low but clean sounding.

Bass goes up to roughly 2-4000 hz and same thing with overtones.Use a hi pass filter to cut frequencies below 40hz unless you want Rap sub bass. Gets rid of low end mudiness and boom.

On all instruments all the frequencies below 40hz are nothing but mud and sludge unless you want rap bass.Get rid of them.

250 hz is where all the low mids build up so dipping at 250 hz slightly clears mudiness and cleans up tracks or individual instruments.Things sound cleaner and more defined.

4000hz dip slightly when something is "harsh". 4000hz is what most fire alarms and emergency alarms are at to get peoples attention.Cutting it "softens a track.

A slight boost at 4k will bring someones attention to it. Use wisely and sparingly.
